Frequently Asked Questions
Our entrance is located on the first floor of the northwest side of the building. It is marked with a large brown entrance sign. Please try to park in the West lot because that is where patients will be picked up after recovery from surgery/procedures.
In the event of an emergency, a family member or friend should be available at our facility. Your surgery time is an estimate and your doctor will want to speak with a family member or friend after your surgery and let them know how you are doing and perhaps give further instructions.
Children up to the age of 8 may be accompanied by one parent into the operating room while the Anesthesiologist makes the child comfortable. Then the parent is escorted to the waiting area during the surgical procedure. A consent form is filled out by the parent prior to surgery.
"NPO" means "Nothing by Mouth." It means you should not take any food or fluids prior to your procedure. Normally you will be asked to fast at least eight hours prior to the procedure. Exceptions are made for the need to take some medication, but that will be discussed with you by your doctor.
This allows us enough time for registration and for the Admitting Nurse to interview you while reviewing your medical history. The nurse also needs to check your vital signs and start an IV in order to give pre-operative medications. During this time your Surgeon, Anesthesiologist, and Operative Nurse will get a chance to visit with you and answer any questions.
Recovery time can vary depending upon the type and length of the procedure and individual factors. Most patients will meet discharge criteria within 1-2 hours.
Immediately after surgery you will be stabilized in phase I of recovery, we do not allow visitors in this area. After the patient has had a change to wake up, they will be moved to phase II where they will have a chance to visit with family and friends.
The medications given to you have a long-lasting effect and you are legal considered to be under the influence for 24 hours or as long as you are taking pain medication after surgery and therefore you should not drive.
